AccessComputing: Accessible Curriculum/Instruction

AccessComputing helps students with disabilities successfully pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in computing fields, and works to increase the capacity of postsecondary institutions and other organizations to fully include students with disabilities in computing courses and programs. We encourage postsecondary institutions to ensure that their curriculum and instruction is accessible to students with disabilities.

Universal design of instruction (UDI) encourages faculty to design instructional materials and activities that make the learning goals achievable by individuals with wide differences in their abilities to see, hear, speak, move, read, write, understand English, attend, organize, engage, and remember. UDI is achieved by means of flexible curricular materials and activities that provide alternatives for students with differing abilities. These alternatives are built into the instructional design and operating systems of educational materials-they are not added on after-the-fact.

A departmental plan can specify that they will encourage faculty to consider UDI as they design their courses, consult with AccessComputing materials, and contact AccessComputing for assistance.Information about UDI is available on our website. We encourage departments and faculty to contact us with any questions that they may have about making their curriculum and instruction accessible to students with disabilities.
